In every facet of our lives: relationship, wellness, career or life meaning, we want to achieve success faster. But, who says it has to always be hard? It's fitting we start with the metaphor of running.

Walk Don't Run by Dianne Orwig

The myth that long bouts of cardiovascular work (such as distance running) is the best activity for removing unwanted fat imageis a difficult one to overcome. Talk to anyone who has lost weight as a result of training for a marathon and you’ll be hard-pressed to convince them that anything shorter or easier could possibly work as well or, dare I say, better.

Thankfully, lots of folks who once believed otherwise are finally discovering, and admitting, that cardio is not KING when it comes to getting lean and strong.

Let me say for the record that I am not trying to talk anyone out of training for a marathon or suggesting that anyone necessarily quit their running program. My real goal is to demonstrate that there is a simpler, more effective way to shed body fat and, thank heaven, I’m not the only one screaming from the roof tops, “Distance running is not the best way!”

Some things are "hard" like when a teen, or anyone, is bullied. Here are some tips for guiding your teen and, maybe yourself, through those tough times.

Teen Courage by Sandra Ford Walston

Doctors Gary and Ruth Namie started The Workplace Bullying & Trauma Institute years ago. Gary told me, “Fifty-eight percent of bullies are women, and of that fifty-eight percent, approximately eighty-seven percent are women bullying women. Sadly, when the bully finds his or her target, the target pays with his or her job.” It can be as simple as not returning a smile, saying hello or giving the “evil eye.”

Most of the time, it is the loudest and pushiest who set the bully standards for the group. (Unchecked, these same teens demonstrate the same tendencies as adults—e.g., overly zealous behaviors or entitlement). These behaviors do not stop simply because someone graduates from high school or college. Bullying is cruel and unacceptable behavior. The cruelty of children to children is real and it happens at a developmental stage when children are most vulnerable. Preventing bullying, no matter what form it takes, demands personal courage.

Ten Spiritual Secrets to Productivity by Rena M. Reese

From CEO’s to entrepreneurs and entertainers to parents all over the globe, we are constantly in search of ways to boost productivity.

To put it simply, we want to get more done each day.  For some this goal is rooted in the desire for greater abundance while for others, productivity is the gate-keeper to recreation. It is a means to an end and we are hungry for both the freedom and prosperity that productivity provides.  The problem with the  “work harder and longer” approach is that it often yields the unattractive side-effects of exhaustion, stress and a lop-sided life. Adopting a spiritual approach to productivity may actually facilitate greater productivity and energize us more quickly than downing a can of Red Bull.

How to Rebound from Failure and Achieve Peak Performance

relationship, career, leadership

Not everyone who’s on top today got there with success after success. More often than not, those who history best remembers were faced with numerous obstacles that forced them to work harder and show more determination than others.

50 Famously Successful People Who Failed at First by Bud Bilanich

Next time you’re feeling down about your career failures, keep these fifty famous people in mind. Remind yourself that sometimes failure is the tuition you pay for your career success.

1.Henry Ford: While Ford is known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five times before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.

2. R. H. Macy: Most people are familiar with this large department store chain, but Macy didn’t always have it easy. Macy started seven failed businesses before finally hitting big with his store in New York City.

35. Steven Spielberg: While today Spielberg’s name is synonymous with big budgets, he was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Theater, Film and Television three times. He eventually attended school at another location, only to drop out to become a director before finishing. Thirty-five years after starting his degree, Spielberg returned to school in 2002 to finally complete his work and earn his BA.

36. Stephen King: The first book by this author, the iconic thriller," Carrie", received 30 rejections, finally causing King to give up and throw it in the trash. His wife fished it out and encouraged him to resubmit it, and the rest is history.  King now has published hundreds of books with the added distinction of being one of the best-selling authors of all time.

John Wooden: What the Obituaries Missed by Michael Lee Stallard

"Make the effort. Do your best. The score cannot make you a loser when you do that; it cannot make you a winner if you do less.” Coach John Robert Wooden

Thinking about the death of legendary basketball coach, John Wooden, I couldn't help but think of his legacy and mine.

Coach Wooden operated a meritocracy that treated every player fairly. He didn’t believe in the star system and told his players, "The star of the team is the team." Wooden benched Sidney Wicks, one of the nation's best players, for a season because he wasn’t passing to his open teammates. (The following year, a more selfless Wicks was awarded All-American honors and helped UCLA win a national championship.) No one’s position was safe if Wooden felt another player had proven he could perform better for the team’s sake. At the same time, however, he recognized that the non-starters didn’t receive the praise that starters did. So, he encouraged and affirmed them in practice, and,as he said in an interview in 1996, “I became a little closer with some of my players [who] didn’t get to play very much.”

The World is Getting Smaller and Living in Denial by Judith Glaser

This month I had the incredible opportunity to speak in Dubai to an audience of over 450 people for the 9th HR Conference put on by Etisalat Academy, the largest single-source provider of training and development solutions in the Middle East. I spoke about how companies start to fail  when leaders make themselves the center of the universe and the dynamics within the organization become all about pleasing the boss. However, when it's "WE-centric" - the company mission and the relationship with their customer become the center of the universe - all work together to achieve outrageous goals. Winning takes on a new definition - and the profits follow. The room was silent - heads were bobbing in agreement - something I will never forget.

We talked a lot about 'having a voice' - and how hierarchy and fear of authority can cause people to feel afraid to speak up.  I talked about how important it is for leaders to set the tone and encourage pushback. I shared that too often 'leaders are the last to know' because people are afraid of them - and so all the observations and ideas that employees might contribute get lost behind the leader's power. When this happens a company starts to disconnect from reality.

How to Achieve Clarity, Succeed and Why We Contribute

The first rule of communication is what people think you mean is what you intended to mean.  Without that, all you have is miscommunication. And, you know what can happen there...conflict!

Ten Ways to Argue Well by Larry Lipman

imageWant to know how to handle conflict and communicate effectively? Here are ten ways to handle a charged disagreement, get your point across and keep your relationships solid:

  1. Geography --- immediately go to another room, outside, or different location.
Move, move, move.  Leave the original stress scene behind!
  2. Remember behavior is not the person.  They are separate.  How people behave is not who they are.
  3. Listen, listen, listen,  listen,  listen,   listen,  listen,  listen, listen.
  4. Your tone of voice is everything.  Raise it and you raise your partner’s defenses and add hours to the upset, not to mention hurt feelings.   Speak softly and clearly without anger….even if your parents didn’t.

Clarity in Knowing the Difference between Cats & Dogs by Simon Sinek

What's the difference between a cat and a dog?

We know they are similar in many respects. For example, they are both mammals, they are both common pets, they are both furry and they both have four legs and a tail. But without getting into the biology, the differences are harder to explain. We know they are different, very different, it's just hard to put into words.  Unlike when we explain the similarities, when we explain the differences we start to describe their personalities more and the superficial differences less.  For example, cats tend to look after themselves more and dogs need more attention. Cats act cool. Dogs are more excitable.

The same is true of mission statements and vision statements. If we want to be strict, a vision is the public statement an organization uses to describe its WHY. It should have nothing to do with what the organization does, the products it produces or the services it offers.  It should have no comparative language like better or best.  It shouldn't be about the organization at all, in fact.  It should be about the world those in the organization imagine. The world they want to build.  That's the reason it's called a vision - it's something you can see - something far away that does not exist yet.  "What's your vision?" means tell me what the world looks like if everything goes your way.  Now for your mission >>

Called to Level the Playing Field by Donald Van de Mark

imageAndrew Ferguson never thought he’d be a teacher. In fact he’d known since he was four years old that he wanted to get a law degree. But he wanted to do something in between college and law school that gave him significant responsibility and independence—and something that could have an impact on a big scale. Teach for America offered the perfect opportunity to do so.

But why would a talented college grad destined for a law degree choose to teach disadvantaged kids in a run-down trailer for two long years?

For Andrew, it’s all a matter of fairness. “Any sport you look at, everyone plays by the same rules,” he explains. “Who wins is dependent upon how well you work as a team, your skill, and how many hours you practice. Take that analogy to life. Sure, you have the same rules—but it’s like one kid’s trying to play basketball wearing a fifty-pound weight on his back.”

When asked why he cares about the kid carrying the extra fifty pound weight, Andrew replies, “Because I didn’t have one.” Read more about leveling the playing field >>

The Power of One by Marci Garson

“I want to use what I do normally in life to make a difference,” Shobha Vanchiswar explained, “ it’s the power of one.”image

And with that in mind, the scientist/artist/ poet has now become an author of a book of poetry and images of orphans in her native India; a project aimed at raising money directly for children inflicted with HIV or the AIDS virus.

Vanchiswar admits she could not have accomplished this venture without the help of another resident in her hometown of Chappaqua New York; namely former President Bill Clinton.

“I was folding laundry one day and watching him (Clinton) on TV.”  The way Clinton spoke about the AIDS Initiative of the Clinton Foundation, and getting money and medicine directly to those who need it gave her goose bumps. “I’d never seen a person of that stature talk about what’s going on in MY head!”

While it was not unusual for Clinton’s daily exercise routine to take him down Vanchiswar’s street, it was a bit cosmic that he picked that same day to walk right by her house. Read more for what happened >>
