Spring Forward to Reinvention

It has been about 5 weeks since Spring officially began but for many of us winter has just left. We don't know if it's that feeling of freedom from wearing fewer clothes or longer days to enjoy the sunlight but we do know it always calls for re-invention. That "changing" can show up by finding a new love, pursuing a career passion, losing weight or just clearing out all the junk we've accumulated.

Let's start with the big event of the week, the upcoming marriage of the royals.

Happily Ever After: Marriage Tips for Royalty by Sandwiched Boomers

The 19th century English poet, Lord Alfred Tennyson, put this universal truth in writing: "In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." And there's no better time of the year for a royal wedding! The April 29, 2011 marriage of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton, at Westminster Abbey will be one of the most viewed TV events of the century.

Lots of girls grow up reading fairy tales about princesses and hoping to find a prince of their own. But living life in the limelight can make it difficult to build a successful relationship. Whether your marriage will last depends, in part, on how you prepare for the challenges. Here are 6 tips that will be as helpful to you as the young royals. Read more >>

A Time to Renew One's Spirit by Sandra Ford Walston

Spring is a time of rebirth, renewal and optimism for a beautiful life—one that is filled with heart and spirit—the etymology of the word, "courage." The driver behind courage is the meaningfulness of your life. Spring is a time to dye to the false Self and welcome the true Self. Planting a seed in your spirit called “courageous will” supports you to grow and rejoice, allowing you to awaken this forgotten virtue.

Here is my list of the top 5 all-time powerhouse consumable items on the planet. Make sure that at least a few of these foundations of health land in your grocery cart - and your stomach - every week:

I was always in between, never feeling like anything was ‘right’. At work, I was always behind; I was anxious about my career path. I needed to make money. I didn’t want anyone to realize that maybe my brain had in fact, gone to mush after too many episodes of Sesame Street (which I admit, I really enjoyed). And then there is the Mommy pull. We want to hold them, and talk to them and nurture all of their needs so they never feel like we aren’t there for them.

But in truth, I could only take so many pretend Barbie games and work was always in the back of my mind. And while I worked, I wanted to be with my kids. They will only be this age for so long! I swear someone could sell that on a blanket, it’s the dreaded phrase all Mom’s hear and think about….

As with many of us, I plodded along, did the best I could, and was determined to do it my way. I am a big believer that all of us find our way and that what might work for one Mom or executive, won’t work for another. So these little tips are offered to you – the working Mom or Dad that has sacrificed the freedom of lunches where they actually serve you, and is determined to parent as best as possible, all while managing life, and everything it. Read more.>

Self-confidence comes from being authentic and believing in yourself. It can be nurtured by your family and friends, and you can build on that by acknowledging your results. But, first, you have to know who your are and what you stand for which is a great springboard to reach your goals. Donald Van de Mark, who recently wrote the book, The Good Among the Great, the personality traits of the happiest people, says we need a period of quiet reflection or "creative incubation" to find out who we are, what we want and then go for it!

The Link to Happiness and Productivity by Donald Van de Mark

It's my strong conviction that each of us can cultivate a stronger, more genuine and singular way of being. And if you do, you're well on your way to an autonomous, self-directed life, a life that's more yours and thus more joyous.

There are many ways to become more autonomous: listen and act on your daydreams, and as Joseph Campbell advised, "Find quiet time alone every day where "you don't know who your friends are, you don't know what you owe anybody, you don't know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be.

This is the place of creative incubation." Read more >>

Three Myths of Self Confidence by Sharon Melnick

Can you figure out which of these myths about confidence is fact and which is fiction?

1) If your ratio of positive to negative thoughts is less than 3:1 everyday, you will take two years off of your life.

Answer: TRUE. According to a Mayo Clinic study, your doubting, questioning, self critical thoughts wear and tear at your body, and can significantly affect the longevity of your life.

The Power of Saying Who You Are, Not What You're Not by Simon Sinek

Leadership never defines its cause or its vision by what it is not. Great leadership always tells us what it is, where we’re going or who we are. John F. Kennedy didn’t tell us we’re not going to stay on the earth, he told us we’re going to the moon. The founding fathers didn’t define America as a country that would not subjugate, coerce or cause unhappiness. They said the country was founded to guarantee certain unalienable rights among those being life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Though the negative statement is technically accurate, it does not inspire. Negative looks backwards and positive looks forward. Vision, if it is to inspire, always looks forward.

Companies make the same mistake. It is amazing how many businesses define themselves by what they are not instead of who they are. Too many jump at the opportunity to tell you what they don’t do instead of what they do do. As for you, how do you communicate who you are? Read more >>

---

Your Setbacks and Cynics Don't Define You by Margie Warrell

If you study history, you will find that all stories of great success are also stories of great triumph over adversity. But often we overlook the setbacks and only see the end success. We think the person got lucky: "He or she must have been at the right place at the right time." Or maybe they were just really smart. Or talented. Or well connected. But that’s all bunk. While it may have been a little bit of each, what ultimately led to their success was their refusal to allow their setbacks and failures to define them.

Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow and anti-social. Eventually, he was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. You could say he had a slower start than many of his childhood peers. But I'm sure you'd agree that he eventually caught up pretty well. Today the name Albert Einstein is synonymous with genius.

So, what does define a person? >>
